Hahnemühle Ingres Pastel offers pastel artists the perfect surface. Designed for this specific artistic technique, the Ingres Pastel 100 gsm paper has fine ridges and a slightly rough surface. It allows even colour adherence without using a lot of pressure, producing precise and colour-intensive results. Thanks to the exclusive use of high-quality pigmented colours in the production of this paper, Ingres Pastel boasts exceptional lightfastness. It is ideal for pastels, pencils and red chalk. Hahnemühle Ingres Pastel is available in pads containing 20 sheets and as an assortment of nine different shades – comprising 3 sheets each of bright white and white, and 2 sheets each of ivory, antique, corn, sand grey, brown, middle grey, and grey. The paper content of each pad has two cut edges and two deckle-edges. The deckle-edges are created naturally during the production process. This process can result in minimal format deviations, which underlines the character of a natural product and makes each sheet unique. What is Hahnemühle Ingres Pastel Paper Best Suited For? Hahnemühle Ingres is a classic, fine-ridged pastel paper with a slightly rough surface, making it excellent for techniques where precision and clear lines are valued. Its 100 gsm weight and texture makes it ideal for: Fine Art Drawing with Pastels: The paper's fine texture "grabs" the pigment without being too coarse, making it perfect for fine details, sketching, and a drawing-like style with pastel pencils, hard pastels, charcoal, and red chalk.Light Layering: You can layer colour on the paper, but it is not suited for heavy layering like coarser papers (such as sanded or velour papers). It is at its best when you want to maintain a sense of lightness and airiness in the drawing.Utilising a Toned Ground: As the pad contains nine different shades, the paper serves as an excellent mid-tone ground, upon which it is easy to build both highlights and shadows. Pastel Tips to Try with Ingres Paper: Utilise the Paper's Texture: Don't try to cover the paper's surface completely. Allow the fine ridges of the paper to show through in light strokes. You can try drawing with the side of a pastel stick, which will beautifully bring out the paper's texture and create a lively surface.Try Light Blending: Colours do blend on Ingres paper, but vigorous rubbing can "polish" the paper's surface. Use a finger or a blending stump gently to create soft transitions, rather than trying to blend the colours together forcefully.Combine Hard and Soft Materials: Start your sketch with hard pastels or pastel pencils, which grip the paper's surface well. Then, add more intense areas of colour and highlights with soft pastels. This way, you maintain control and precision while also incorporating the intensity of soft pastels.Use the Paper's Colour as Part of the Artwork: Choose a paper shade from the pad that supports the mood of your piece. For instance, a sand grey or antique tone can serve as a stunning base for a landscape or portrait, meaning you don't have to paint everything from scratch.
